Lutz Cemetery: A Historic, Veteran‑Centered Landmark Celebrating 115 Years of Service and Community Impact

Lutz, Florida — Lutz Cemetery, one of the most historically significant and community‑driven cemeteries in Florida, is marking its 115th year as a cornerstone of local heritage, veteran honor, and youth engagement. As one of only two cemeteries in the entire United States owned and operated by an American Legion Post, Lutz Cemetery stands as a rare and powerful example of veteran‑led stewardship.  It is the only one of the two cemeteries open to the public for burial, and is expanding with an additional 10 acres that will include a serenity park and areas for events.

In addition to its unique ownership, Lutz Cemetery is also one of just 10 designated Wreaths Across America cemeteries in the local region, proudly participating in the national movement to remember fallen heroes, honor those who serve, and teach the next generation the value of freedom.

For more than a century, Lutz Cemetery has served as a place of remembrance, reflection, and community connection. Today, it continues to expand its mission through a wide range of programs and events that bring veterans, families, and young people together throughout the year.

A Year‑Round Commitment to Service and Education

Lutz Cemetery sponsors and hosts numerous community and veteran‑focused initiatives, including:

  • Youth service projects that teach responsibility, history, and civic pride
  • The annual Heroes Connect Veterans Expo, connecting veterans and families with resources, support, and community partners
  • Memorial Day and Purple Heart ceremonies honoring sacrifice and service
  • Veterans Day tributes recognizing all who have served
  • The Wreaths Across America campaign each December, ensuring every veteran laid to rest is remembered with dignity

Youth service project opportunities include:

- Cleaning

- Fencing

- Scattering Garden

- Flag Retirement Park

- Historian Projects

These programs reflect the cemetery’s ongoing commitment to honoring veterans, preserving local history, and inspiring the next generation to carry forward the values of service and remembrance.  Some ways community members can make a lasting impression for generations to come include contributing to:

- Tree Hero Sponsorship program.  Community members can sponsor the purchase of one of 30 crepe myrtle trees being brought in as part of our revitalization project.  With a contribution of $575, each sponsor will be honored with a permanent plaque at the tree site and a custom engraved brick on Patriot's Way.
