A New Chapter for Historic Lutz Cemetery
Long before a new era of stewardship began at Historic Lutz Cemetery, members of American Legion Post 108 were among the community volunteers who gave their time and resources to help care for this historic place.
Over the years, Legionnaires participated in cemetery cleanups, repairs, maintenance projects, and preservation efforts. One notable project included replacing the roof of the cemetery's interment building after members recognized that the aging structure needed attention. Their service reflected something that has always been important to Historic Lutz Cemetery: this cemetery belongs to the story of the entire Lutz community, and preserving it requires people who are willing to care.
A New Era of Stewardship
In the spring of 2024, responsibility for the cemetery entered a new chapter. A Florida nonprofit corporation assumed stewardship of the property and the enormous responsibility of preserving more than a century of cemetery history. Originally incorporated as American Legion Post 108 Holding, Inc., the corporation was subsequently renamed Historic Lutz Cemetery, Inc. to more accurately reflect its independent purpose and long-term mission.
The transition brought with it decades of cemetery records—boxes of documents, handwritten notes, maps, ownership information, and an aging index-card system containing generations of burial records.
Preserving that history became one of the new organization's first priorities.
Local Lutz resident Toni Hedstrom was brought in to lead an extensive records digitization, cemetery mapping, and modernization project. What followed was approximately 18 months of research and fieldwork designed to answer two fundamental questions:
Who is entrusted to our care—and where are they?
Thousands of records were reviewed and digitized. Burial locations were researched and verified. Cemetery ownership records were organized, and the property was digitally mapped to create a modern cemetery management system capable of preserving information that had previously existed primarily on paper.
The work extended far beyond the office. Field investigation throughout the cemetery helped identify and document burial locations, reconcile historical records with physical gravesites, and preserve information that might otherwise have been lost with time.
Rediscovering the Cemetery
The project revealed something else that would significantly change the future of Historic Lutz Cemetery.
For years, it had been widely believed that the cemetery was approaching—or had already reached—capacity. Detailed mapping, ownership research, and field verification told a different story.
The team identified hundreds of previously undocumented available burial spaces, opening the possibility for Historic Lutz Cemetery to continue serving families well into the future.
Technology has also changed how families can connect with the cemetery. Historic burial and ownership information that once existed in boxes and handwritten files is now maintained digitally, and families can use online burial records and cemetery mapping tools to help locate loved ones entrusted to our care.
Preserving the Past. Building the Future.
Today, Historic Lutz Cemetery is moving forward with a broader mission than simply maintaining cemetery grounds.
We are preserving historical records. Improving cemetery infrastructure. Restoring and protecting gravesites. Expanding burial and cremation options. Developing new memorial spaces. Honoring the veterans entrusted to our care. And finding new ways to preserve the stories of the people whose lives helped build this community.
Future projects include expanded columbarium options through Legacy Lane, preservation and infrastructure improvements throughout the cemetery, and thoughtfully planned memorial spaces designed to serve future generations while protecting the historic character of the property.
More than a century after the first recorded burial, Historic Lutz Cemetery remains what it has always been: a place where the history of Lutz is written in names, dates, families, and stories.
Our responsibility now is to protect what previous generations left behind while preparing this historic place to serve the generations still to come.

More Than a Century of History—Now at Your Fingertips
When Lutz Cemetery was established in 1911, cemetery records were kept the way nearly everything was recorded in the early 20th century—on paper. Names were handwritten, burial information was recorded in ledgers and files, and the location of a gravesite often depended upon maps, institutional knowledge, and the memories of those who cared for the cemetery.
More than a century later, Historic Lutz Cemetery has entered a very different era.
Today, those generations of history are being preserved through a 21st-century digital cemetery management and mapping system. Burial records, ownership information, cemetery sections, individual sites, and historical information have been brought together to create a digital footprint for a cemetery whose story began more than 115 years ago.

Our interactive digital map allows families and visitors to search cemetery records, locate loved ones, explore burial locations, and navigate the cemetery in ways that would have been unimaginable to the generations who first cared for this land.
Visitors can search for an individual and use the mapping system to help identify their location within the cemetery—including GPS-guided navigation to assist them in finding a particular gravesite.
But the technology serves a purpose far greater than convenience.
It helps us preserve history.
Information once contained only in aging documents, handwritten cards, maps, and institutional memory can now become part of a permanent digital record. For genealogists, family historians, students, researchers, descendants of early Lutz families, and future generations, that creates an extraordinary connection between the cemetery's past and its future.
A 20th-Century Cemetery With a 21st-Century Footprint
Historic Lutz Cemetery will always be a physical place—a landscape of century-old oaks, monuments, family names, veterans, pioneers, and generations of people who called this community home.
But today, its history extends beyond the cemetery gates.
The same names once written carefully onto paper records can now be searched and preserved digitally. The gravesites once located primarily through memory and hand-drawn maps can now be documented geographically. And the stories entrusted to this cemetery can continue to become more accessible to families and researchers wherever they may be.
Our tools have changed. Our responsibility has not.
More than a century after Lutz Cemetery began, we are using the technology of today to protect the history of yesterday—and preserve it for tomorrow.
