A Brief History of Service Animals and Their Posthumous Honors
Service animals - especially dogs - have a long and distinguished history of assisting humans in both times of peace and conflict. From ancient battlefields to modern hospitals, service animals have provided loyalty, protection, and life-changing support.
Throughout history, dogs have served as messengers in war, comforters in trauma recovery, guides for the blind, and helpers for those with physical or emotional challenges. In World War I and II, dogs like Stubby and Chips earned medals for bravery. As the roles of service animals expanded into civilian life - assisting veterans with PTS, children with autism, and individuals with mobility challenges - their importance only grew.
Yet, honoring these animals after death has not always been consistent. Traditionally, most service animals were quietly laid to rest by their families or handlers, with little formal recognition. However, in recent decades, awareness of their impact has led to a movement to honor them more visibly.
