Monument & Marker Requirements

Guidelines for the design, approval, and installation of memorials at Historic Lutz Cemetery.

Historic Lutz Cemetery welcomes families to create meaningful, lasting memorials while maintaining standards that protect the cemetery's safety, appearance, and historic character. Cemetery staff must review and approve all monuments, markers, and permanent memorial designs before purchase, fabrication, delivery, or installation.

Please review the following requirements before ordering a memorial or beginning a design with a monument provider.

General Requirements

Prior Approval

All monuments, markers, and permanent memorials must receive prior approval from Historic Lutz Cemetery.

Construction

Memorials must be constructed from durable, weather-resistant materials appropriate for cemetery use, such as granite or bronze.

Not Permitted

Homemade or temporary materials may not be used as permanent grave markers.

Temporary Markers

Temporary markers must be registered with cemetery staff, and an anticipated replacement date should be provided.

Design

Monument size, style, material, placement, foundation, and installation must comply with the requirements applicable to the burial site.

Size Guidelines*

Single Grave
  • Upright Monument: Max 30" high x 24" wide x 12" deep
  • Flat Marker: Max 24" wide x 12" deep
Double Grave
  • Upright Monument: Max 36" high x 48" wide x 14" deep
  • Flat Marker: Max 48" wide x 14" deep
Cremation Only Sites

Flat Marker only: Max 24" wide x 12" deep

Family Estate and designated family-site memorials may allow additional monument styles, including obelisks, columns, or pillars. These designs require individual review and approval by Historic Lutz Cemetery.

Foundations

All upright monuments must be installed on an appropriate foundation. Foundation requirements will be reviewed as part of the monument approval process.

Installation must be scheduled with Historic Lutz Cemetery in advance. Monument placement and installation may only be performed by qualified professionals or installers approved to work within the cemetery.

Inscription, Artwork & Design Guidelines

Memorial inscriptions, photographs, symbols, artwork, and other design elements must be respectful and appropriate for a cemetery setting.

Memorials may not contain advertising, commercial or promotional messaging, political campaign material, or offensive or inappropriate language or imagery.

Families are encouraged to incorporate meaningful personal elements—including photographs, artwork, religious or military symbols, interests, accomplishments, quotations, and other details that help tell the individual's story—subject to cemetery review and approval.

Installation & Maintenance

Families are responsible for the ongoing maintenance, repair, and restoration of privately owned monuments and markers.

Historic Lutz Cemetery's routine grounds care includes maintenance of the cemetery grounds surrounding memorials. Routine grounds maintenance does not include detailed monument cleaning, restoration, inscription work, or other specialized memorial services.

Historic Lutz Cemetery offers optional Professional Monument Cleaning and other memorial-care services for families who would like additional assistance.

EXPLORE MONUMENT & GRAVESITE CARE

Memorial & Gravesite Restrictions

  • Glass, ceramic, shells, artificial turf, and other breakable or inappropriate decorative materials are not permitted.
  • Do not install fencing, curbing, borders, or enclosures around gravesites or monuments without cemetery approval.
  • Permanent lighting or electrical features require prior written approval.
  • Items that interfere with grounds maintenance, create a safety concern, or may damage monuments or cemetery equipment may be removed.

Approval Process

Before Ordering Your Monument

Please obtain cemetery approval before your memorial is fabricated or installed. 

To request approval, provide:

  • Drawing, rendering, or photograph of the proposed memorial
  • Exact monument dimensions
  • Material and color
  • Base and foundation dimensions, when applicable
  • Proposed inscription and layout
  • Artwork, photographs, symbols, or other design elements
  • Monument provider/installer information
